October marks Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people throughout history, while also reflecting on the systemic barriers that continue to affect Black communities today. This year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Narrative”, speaks to the importance of reasserting control over the stories, histories, and experiences of Black people, often misrepresented or erased in mainstream discourse. It also focuses on empowering the next generation, fostering a space where young Black voices are nurtured, uplifted, and equipped for success.

In the context of the NHS and the workplace, these two components—reclaiming the narrative and empowering the next generation—have deep and important implications. They call for critical reflection on how Black history is understood, taught, and how future generations of Black leaders and professionals can be supported in healthcare and beyond.

Throughout Black History Month 2024, a range of events, discussions, and educational activities will occur across the country, all focused on Reclaiming Narratives. Across Kent and Medway, we are collaborating with partners and inviting you to join the conversation, share your stories, and participate in this movement. Use #ReclaimingNarrativesBHM  on social media to connect with others and keep the Our focus ‘Reclaiming the Narratives’, marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black History and culture.

History of Cumulative Events:

In 2018, our Diversity conference was in Black History Month and we looked at ethnic minority individuals and their career paths to success within the NHS. In 2019, we celebrated events throughout the year and when we focused on Black History Month we celebrated the “Future of our History”. We highlighted ways in which the history of Diversity is enmeshed across healthcare and beyond and hoped to inspire more in the trust to take motivation from the diversity that is all around.  In 2021, we focussed on what the NHS@73 means for this generation of ethnic minority staff, in 2022 the theme was Time for change, focusing on actions and not words and last year we successfully showcased inspirational black women and their contribution to healthcare and fields of employ such as Politics, Business, and sport to name a few ‘Saluting our Sisters’.

Where we are now:

We as the BAME Network in 2024 will be showcasing and discussing ‘Reclaiming the Narrative’ what that means to us all as individuals and what that means to the organisations we all work within.

We will have guest speakers (to be advised) alongside senior leaders from across the system about challenges facing colleagues and communities from an ethnic background within Kent and Medway and articulating future plans as part of the NHS EDI Improvement and ongoing engagement within health and social care systems.

Virtual Events: Empowering Conversations Across the ICS

We’re also partnering with colleagues from across the healthcare system to host two virtual events this month. These events are open to all staff and will focus on empowering the next generation and honoring the contributions of unsung Black heroes within our system. Join the conversation, share your stories, and be part of this important movement.
