When we visited the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend to learn more about the Sikh community for South Asian Heritage Month, we were astounded by the welcome and warmth shown to us and wanted to reciprocate. Diljeet Kaur Nota, from the Gurdwara Wellbeing Team, explained that the menopause was still a taboo subject among women, and that she would be happy to have some support in English and Punjabi.
She invited us to the Health and Wellbeing Event held on Sunday, 3rd December along with Dr Sati Lall, GP Partner, Clinical Lead and GP Tutor, who met with visitors to talk about women’s health in general but more specifically about the menopause. There were many other stalls –council, prison service, mental health, citizen’s advice, domestic violence, NHS vaccinations, CPR, etc. – and the event was well attended, coinciding with a Guru’s birthday celebration at the Gurdwara.
Plans are for us to be back early 2024 for a dedicated women’s health day.
