This series of webinars has been developed for Tissue Viability Ambassadors in general practice to provide tools for implementing clinical knowledge, support behaviour change in patients, compassionate communication, and to spot the signs of and overcome compassion fatigue. Other Primary Care staff who are interested in these topics are welcome to attend especially if they are interested in tissue viability and behaviour change.
It is recommended to attend the whole 3-webinar series. You will receive an attendance certificate after each webinar.
Webinar 1:
Book your place: Reducing the impact of care using behaviour change techniques
Thursday 25th April 1-2pm
One of the ways to reduce the burden of care for both patients and the NHS is by empowering and supporting patients to increase self-care and self-management for their conditions. We can do this using behaviour change techniques and by applying behavioural science to our work, patients and ourselves.
Changing behaviours is notoriously difficult, and it is important that healthcare professionals and patients understand and recognise this. Specific behaviours need to be identified before attempting to change them (e.g. reducing sedentary time, taking medications regularly, or looking after one’s health). It is necessary to know different behaviour change techniques and how to use these. This webinar will cover an overview of some behaviour change techniques and provide you with further information and resources.
Webinar 2:
Book your place: Using motivational interviewing to increase patient engagement
Monday 20th May 1-2pm
Motivational Interviewing (MI) helps increase patient engagement and activation, and support long-lasting behaviour change. This webinar will provide you with the basic principles of MI and give examples applied to patients, particularly those who seem to be stuck in their habits and behaviours and not bothered about changing them.
Motivational Interviewing may not work for all patients, but will help many to think about personal changes. One of the goals in MI is to evoke motivation within the patients and use this and what matters to them as a source of behaviour change, which over time may lead to positive behaviour changes across many areas of their lives and perhaps a reduction in the reliance on NHS services.
Webinar 3:
Book your place: Dealing with compassion fatigue: when you can no longer relate to your patient in an empathic way
Tuesday 2nd July 1-2pm
Even the most dedicated healthcare professionals may sometimes struggle to support certain patients with different views, lack of engagement, or abusive behaviour. Learning to cope is essential to avoid feeling low, frustrated, morally injured, or a lack of compassion, all detrimental to your wellbeing and patient care. This webinar will help you deal effectively with these challenges and recognise your own needs and limitations to better look after yourselves, colleagues, and patients.
The first step is to recognise the signs of compassion fatigue and to reflect on your work as a healthcare professional, and you will be taught a few methods to overcome these challenges drawing on various approaches such as self-compassion and reflective practice.
